Bishop Paulose Mar Gregorios, originally named Paul Varghese, was born on 9 August 1922 in Tripunithura and grew up in a devout Christian family. Starting his career as a freelance journalist, he later accepted a teaching job in Ethiopia. Emperor Haile Sellassie noticed his exceptional abilities and appointed him as the Head of various institutions in Ethiopia. To further nurture his potential, the Emperor sent him to the U.S. for advanced studies.
In 1958 he returned to India and was ordained as Deacon. He was one of the Presidents of W.C.C (1983-91) and as the Vice-President of the Christian Peace Conference.In 1967, he was appointed as the Principal of the Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam. He was appointed Metropolitan, on 16 February 1975 and a year later, he took charge of the Delhi Diocese and established the Delhi Orthodox Centre. Throughout his life, he authored numerous literary works and received many esteemed national and international awards. He passed away on 24 November 1996.
On 8 January 1997, the University instituted the Chair in commemoration of the renowned Bishop who served as the Metropolitan of the Delhi Diocese of the Orthodox Syrian Church for over two decades.
