2025
Mahatma Gandhi University has secured the prestigious A++ Grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). In the fourth cycle of re-accreditation, the University achieved an impressive CGPA of 3.61, marking a significant advancement in the national higher education landscape. With this achievement, Mahatma Gandhi University has become the first university in the state to receive an A++ grade in the fourth cycle.
The University has also been awarded Category 1 status by the University Grants Commission (UGC). This distinction makes Mahatma Gandhi University the first university in the state to attain autonomous status, enabling it to implement academic programmes and establish institutions without prior approval from the UGC.
In the Institutional Ranking Framework 2024 of the Government of Kerala, Mahatma Gandhi University secured the third position in the university category. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, the University was placed in the 501–600 band, securing the first position in Kerala and the ninth position nationally.
Mahatma Gandhi University was also honoured with the “Minister’s Award for Excellence”, conferred upon higher education institutions that have demonstrated national-level excellence, achieved high NAAC grades, and secured leading positions in the NIRF and KIRF rankings.
The University received the Biodiversity Award from the State Biodiversity Board, recognising it as the best institution for biodiversity conservation among government, cooperative, and public sector organisations. This award acknowledges the University’s innovative models and exemplary initiatives in the field of environmental conservation.
The University successfully implemented its indigenously developed QR code–based evaluation system. As a result, the results of the first semester examinations of the four-year honours undergraduate programmes were published within three days of the completion of the examinations.
At the All India Inter-University Youth Festival held at Amity University, Noida, Mahatma Gandhi University secured the third position.
During this period, the University also achieved notable success in the field of sports. It won the South Zone Inter-University Men’s Football Championship and secured second place in both the men’s and women’s categories of the South Zone Inter-University Handball Championship. In individual events, M.K. Irfan won a silver medal in the All India Inter-University Best Physique Championship, while V.S. Sanjana secured a silver medal in the 500-metre time trial race at the All India Inter-University Cycling Championship.
As part of timely reforms in the higher education sector, the State Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a Centre of Excellence at Mahatma Gandhi University. The Centre, to be set up under the State Higher Education Council, will focus on research and follow-up activities related to science, technology, and entrepreneurship.
At the University’s Inter-University Centre for Biomedical Research and Super Speciality Hospital (IUCBR & SSH), a new Small Animal House was inaugurated with the support of the State Government at a cost of ₹5 crore. After the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute, this facility is the second-largest Small Animal House in Kerala, with the capacity to house 2,000 mice and 2,000 rats. As part of IUCBR & SSH, an Amoebic Research and Diagnostic Centre was also established to identify pathogens responsible for amoebic meningoencephalitis.
In the Stanford University list of “World’s Top 2% Scientists”, six scientists from Mahatma Gandhi University have been featured. This achievement stands as a recognition of the University’s outstanding contributions to various fields of science.
2024
Following the introduction of four-year Honours undergraduate programmes in the state this academic year, the University received approval from the UGC Distance Education Bureau to conduct online Honours programmes.
CDOE has also launched online Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC) for first-year undergraduate students enrolled in the Graduate School and affiliated colleges.
Dr. R. Bindu, Minister for Higher Education and Social Justice, inaugurated FIFA-standard natural turf football court at MGU.
The University has advanced to the 401-500 rank band in the 2025 rankings, up from the 501-600 category in 2024.
Mahatma Gandhi University has been ranked among the top two percent of Universities in Asia by the Study Abroad Aide rankings.
Degree Honours Programmes at affiliated colleges and 4+1 Programmes at the Study Departments of the University were launched. (July 1)
The International Centre for Polar Studies (ICPS) at Mahatma Gandhi University has been granted membership to the University of the Arctic (UArctic), an international cooperative network based in the Circumpolar Arctic region. (June 2)
Mahatma Gandhi University accomplished a remarkable feat by releasing the results of the final semester BA, BSc, B.Com, BBA, BCA, BSW, BTTM, BSM, and BFM examinations just 10 days after their completion.

Mahatma Gandhi University started a training programme that focuses on utilising advanced survey-mapping systems, including drones, in the field of disaster management. The training was organised as part of ISRO’s disaster relief assistance programme.
The School of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at Mahatma Gandhi University and the Departments of Physics and Chemistry at Kannur University join forces to conduct MSc programmes equivalent to the regular M.Sc. Programmes. On completion of the course, certificate for Joint M. Sc. Physics (Nanoscience and Nanotechnology) and Joint M. Sc.Chemistry (Nanoscience and Nanotechnology) will be awarded under Faculty of Science from the respective parent University.
Mahatma Gandhi University emerged as the champions in the All India Inter University Men’s Handball Championship held at Sacred HeartCollege, Thevara.
Thirty people successfully completed the small category drone pilot training programme approved by the Ministry of Civil Aviation at Mahatma Gandhi University in the first month. The one-week course is conducted by Dr. R. Satheesh Centre for Remote Sensing and GIS working under the auspices of Environmental Sciences, with the technical collaboration of Asia Soft Lab.
MGU announced a strategic partnership with SIBUR, a leading petrochemical giant based in Russia, which marks a significant advancement in the rubber industry’s innovation.

2023
For the third consecutive year, Mahatma Gandhi University secured a place in the World University Rankings published by the London-based Times Higher Education. It shared the Second Position with Anna University ,Tamil Nadu and Jamia Millia Islamia University ,New Delhi.
• Mahatma Gandhi University granted accreditation to the research centre operated by the private bioscience company Agro Bio-Tech (ABTEC) in Kottayam, aligning with the implementation of the triple helix system.
• The University of the Third Age Programme was initiated by MGU to empower senior citizens.
• Mahatma Gandhi University successfully launched online M.Com programmes approved by the UGC, providing an equivalent alternative to traditional programmes.
• MGU’s student insurance scheme was revised to include students’ parents as well, extending coverage to students and their parents across various departments and colleges, both aided and unaided
.• The introduction of the RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system in the University Library is another noteworthy achievement. This system allows members to directly access and manage book borrowing and returns.
• The University’s contribution to advancing technology includes the development of eco-friendly shields for smooth electromagnetic wave movement in sixth-generation wireless networks.
• MGU demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility by establishing a robust disaster relief initiative. The ‘MGU Team On Spot’ comprises 4800 individuals, including volunteers from the National Service Scheme (NSS) and NCC cadets from affiliated colleges, dedicated to disaster management.
• MGU’s Business Innovation and Incubation Centre completed 24 research projects in nine months ,costing Rs. one crore, funded by Kerala’s startup mission.
Mahatma Gandhi University Innovation Foundation (MGUIF) took a significant stride towards promoting deep-tech industries by incubating Panlys Nanotech India Pvt Ltd, a startup specialising in advanced nanotechnology focused on preventing hospital infections.
• Mahatma Gandhi University achieved notable success in national and southern regional sports events in 2023, including winning the overall title in the athletics category at the third Khelo India Inter University Games.
• A Memorandum of Understanding was signed for a 57 croreKIIFB-funded project, establishing an international-level indoor stadium and sports complex, in collaboration with the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Kerala.
2022
MGU secured the 101st position in the Times Ranking for universities in developing countries.
The Institute of Research in Learning Disabilities (IRLD) won the National Award of the Central Government for the best extension services.
MG and Kannur Universities reached an agreement to jointly conduct M.Sc. biotechnology and M.Sc. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology programmes with specialisation in Industrial Bioprocessing.
MGU entered into an academic collaboration agreement with Lincoln University College (LUC), Malaysia.
2021
Mahatma Gandhi University has been ranked third in Atal ranking by the Union Ministry of Education for innovation and entrepreneurship among Indian Universities.
2020
*MGU was awarded the Chancellor’s Prize for The Best University in Kerala, a prestigious honour carrying a reward of Rs. 5 Crores in 2020.
The satellite centre of MGU at Nedunkandam was inaugurated by the Minister of Electricity, Sri M M Mani, on February 17, 2020. The centre aims to solve the educational issues of Idukki to a great extent.
2019
On September 3, 2019, Kerala’s first Mobile Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station for continuous monitoring of air pollution was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Sabu Thomas at M G University.
On 19th August 2019, Kerala’s first Convergence Academia Complex and the celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of the 100 percent literacy attained by Kottayam, were inaugurated by Governor P. Sathasivam . The mission of the Academia Complex is to promote frequent scholastic and cultural interaction among researchers from diverse fields.
Dr K.T Jaleel, Minister for Higher Education, inaugurated the Directorate for Applied Short- Term Programmes (DASP) on 19th August 2019, that aim at expanding the activities of educational institutions in such a way as to benefit the local self-governing bodies as well.
*The former Chief Secretary and the first Vice-Chancellor of Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, Sri K Jayakumar ,inaugurated the training class of the prelims-cum-mains of civil services exam taken at the M G University Civil Service Institute, on July 23, 2019 .
On June 7, 2019, MGU revamped the syllabus and curriculum of the programme, Bachelor of Architecture to be more student-centred, with an emphasis on environmental awareness. The revised curriculum enables credit transfer, allowing students to complete their semesters through student exchange at foreign universities.
M G University has benefited from solar energy installing 400 on-grid solar power plants in 8 buildings .The project was implemented on March 6, 2019, and was included in the RUSA scheme spending Rs 3.25 Crore. The electricity generated by the solar power plant is utilised for University purposes, with the surplus being provided to the KSEB
grid.
2018

The University achieved a significant milestone by implementing the online distribution of question papers for the Post Graduate CSS Examination in March 2017 across all affiliated colleges.
