Minister Dr. R. Bindu to inaugurate FIFA-standard football court

Mahatma Gandhi University, renowned for nurturing many stars in the sports arena, including 11 Olympians, now boasts a FIFA-standard football court. Vice Chancellor Dr. C.T. Aravindakumar announced that Minister for Higher Education and Social Justice Dr. R. Bindu will inaugurate the new natural turf floodlit football court at the MGU stadium on October 22, as part of the fourth edition of the state government’s 100-day programme.

The minister will unveil the stone plaque at the stadium at 10:30 AM and will inaugurate the function held at the University assembly hall. Minister for Cooperation, Devaswoms, and Ports, V.N. Vasavan, will preside over the event. Adv. K. Francis George, MP, will deliver the keynote address. At the function, the University will be felicitated for its A++ Grade from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council .Online AEC courses for first-year undergraduate students, conducted by MG University Centre for Distance and Online Education, will be formally launched.

Vice Chancellor Dr. C.T. Aravindakumar, Syndicate members Adv. Job Maichil MLA, Adv. Reji Zachariah, Dr. Biju Thomas, and Registrar Dr. Bismi Gopalakrishnan will address the gathering. Dr. Binu George Varghese, Director of the School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, will present the report.

District Panchayat President K.V. Bindu, Ettumanoor Block Panchayat President Arya Rajan, Athirampuzha Grama Panchayat President Jose Joseph Ambalakkulam, District Panchayat Member Dr. Rosamma Sony, Block Panchayat Member James Kurian, and Grama Panchayat Member Joshy Elanjiyil will participate.

The players, coaches, and manager from M.G. University who represented the Indian University team at the World University Handball Championship held in Spain will also be honoured during the function.

The Vice Chancellor stated that the state government has been implementing various projects for the development of sports infrastructure at the University in recognition of MGU’s sustained excellence in sports since its establishment in 1983.

The court, measuring 105 metres in length and 65 metres in width, has been equipped with underground sprinklers and drainage facilities, making it suitable for hosting international football matches. The construction was undertaken by the Sports Kerala Foundation.With the completion of developmental projects, including the sports complex project worth ₹57 crores funded by KIIFB, this stadium is set to become one of the major sports centres in the state, further fuelling the growth of sports in Kottayam District and the state in general, the Vice Chancellor added.

University Syndicate members Dr. K.R. Baiju, Registrar Dr. Bismi Gopalakrishnan, and Director of the School of Physical Education and Sports Sciences Dr. Binu George Varghese also attended the press conference.
