Transformative Administrative Leadership

Major infrastructure projects worth nearly ₹300 crore were initiated during this period. These included a new science block, an indoor stadium, an international students’ hostel, and a dedicated hostel for transgender students. The University also introduced several digital reforms, including QR code-based examination evaluation and a centralised internship portal. An in-house software system developed during this period enabled the real-time updating of marks during valuation, allowing the university to publish examination results very quickly.

At the School of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Aravindakumar led research on affordable and sustainable water purification technologies. His team focused on addressing emerging contaminants, including pharmaceutical residues, through advanced filtration and treatment methods.
In 2017, he served as team leader of the Indian Arctic Expedition at the Himadri research station in Svalbard, Norway, contributing to studies on climate change and polar ecosystems. In 2022, the Government of India appointed him chairperson of a national committee tasked with assessing environmental impacts in Antarctica.
Academic Achievements and Policy Initiatives
Prof. Aravindakumar played a key role in establishing the Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility (SAIF) in Kottayam, enhancing access to advanced research instrumentation for students and scientists across the region.
Recognising his expertise in higher education governance, the Government of Kerala appointed him Chairman of the Examination Reform Commission in 2021 to recommend comprehensive reforms to the state’s examination system.
Over the course of his career, he has worked as a visiting researcher at institutions in 17 countries, including the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), United States, and the Max Planck Institute, Germany. He has supervised 32 doctoral scholars and secured more than ₹15 crore in research funding from national and international agencies.
