Dr. M. A. Ittyachen (Mazhuvancheriparambath Abraham Ittyachen), a renowned physicist, educator, and academician, has passed away at the age of 87, on June 19. He holds the historic distinction of being the first faculty member to be appointed at Mahatma Gandhi University when it was established in 1983.

As the Founder Director and Head of the School of Pure and Applied Physics, it was under his leadership that the department grew into an outstanding center for teaching and research. He has also served on academic and administrative committees across various universities. He retired from service in 2001.

A prominent figure in Kerala’s scientific and academic sectors, Dr. Ittyachen gained international recognition for his research in the fields of crystalline materials, biological crystals, phosphors. He published numerous research papers and was also active in scientific literature, authoring works such as Nammude Sasthrakranmar (Our Scientists) and Richard Feynman: Manushyasnehiyuya Oru Saidhanthika Sasthrajnan (Richard Feynman: A Philanthropic Theoretical Scientist).

In a condolence message, Mahatma Gandhi University Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) D. Mavoothu expressed his deep sorrow, noting that the passing of Dr. Ittyachen is a significant loss to the academic community. The Vice-Chancellor remembered him as a key builder of institutions whose foundational work helped shape the university’s academic standard.

He is survived by his wife, Soumini (Rachel). Children: Dr. Abraham Ittyachen, Biju Ittyachen, and Annu Ittyachen. In-laws: Dr. Lisa, Renju, and Mathew Varghese.
