Mahatma Gandhi University marked World Environment Day by launching the campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (Plant4Mother). The initiative was inaugurated by Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Prof. (Dr.) D. Mavoothu, at a function held on the University campus.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice-Chancellor highlighted that the true strength of the University lies in its diversity and inclusiveness, bringing together people from different backgrounds irrespective of caste, religion, or political affiliation. He noted that, in an age marked by rapid environmental changes, education must be grounded in sustainable ecological thinking. Alongside fostering scientific awareness, he emphasised the responsibility of academic institutions to preserve the nation’s heritage and indigenous knowledge systems.
Prof. Mavoothu observed that Indian culture has traditionally regarded nature as a mother and has long promoted a harmonious relationship between humans and the environment. He expressed satisfaction that his first official function after assuming charge as Vice-Chancellor was dedicated to environmental conservation and ecological responsibility.
Dr. Mahesh Mohan, Director of the School of Environmental Sciences, welcomed the gathering. The programme was presided over by University Registrar Prof. (Dr.) Bismi Gopalakrishnan. Controller of Examinations Dr. Sreejith C. M. and University Students’ Union Chairperson Mr. Mithun M. S. offered felicitations. Estate Officer Mr. Jimson John proposed the vote of thanks.
As part of the campaign, a sapling was planted near Rabindra Sarovar within the University campus under the leadership of the Vice-Chancellor.
