From Waste to Wealth: The MGU Green Lab Story

MGU Green Lab, initiated in 2021 as a value addition initiative of Nirmmalam MGU, the Green Protocol implementation project of Mahatma Gandhi University, promotes the sustainable management of biodegradable waste generated on campus.

Guided by the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Upcycle, the initiative explores practical ways to turn discarded materials into useful resources.

Food waste, fallen leaves and other biodegradable materials are processed through aerobic composting to produce nutrient rich compost. At the Green Lab workstation, equipment including wood chippers, leaf shredders, manure mixers, crushers and compost sifters supports further processing and product development.

‘Brown Gold’

The Lab produces ‘Brown Gold’, a compost based organic manure; ‘Plant Now Pots’, made by reusing plastic barrels; Potting Mixture, prepared using compost and other organic materials; and Shredded Dry Leaves, which help improve aeration and water retention in potting mixtures.

The strength of MGU Green Lab lies in the people who embraced its ideas and turned them into everyday practices. Waste segregation, responsible consumption and the active participation of cleaning staff, students, faculty members and supporting staff have together created the foundation of the project.

Student Participation

Students actively participate in the daily operations of the Green Lab through the ‘Earn While You Learn initiative’, gaining practical experience while contributing to a cleaner and greener campus. The project also encourages members of the University community to adopt composting, gardening and family farming practices at home.

Since its launch, MGU Green Lab has taken its products and ideas beyond the campus through exhibitions, outreach programmes and public engagements. The enthusiastic response from various communities have created demand for its products and generated revenue for the University.

Replicable Model

More than a waste management initiative, MGU Green Lab is a practical learning space where sustainability is experienced through participation. Its approach demonstrates how proper segregation, aerobic composting, reuse and student involvement can help educational institutions recover value from biodegradable waste.

The experience of MGU Green Lab offers a simple and adaptable model for schools, colleges, residential communities and other institutions. Every campus generates biodegradable waste, but every campus also has people who can become active partners in finding sustainable solutions.
