The 36-member contingent from India, comprising both men’s and women’s teams, is set to depart for Antequera, Spain, on June 21 to participate in the World University Handball Championship commencing on June 24. The team selection was conducted by Mahatma Gandhi University, mandated by the Association of Indian Universities.
Players from approximately one hundred universities participated in the selection trials, resulting in the selection of 14 players each for the men’s and women’s teams. The teams completed a 20-day training programme at Nehru Stadium, Kottayam. Dr. Binu George Varghese, Director of the School of Physical Education and Sports at MG University, is leading the Indian contingent. Jasmeet Singh from Punjabi University and Bipin Preet Kaur from L.P. University Punjab are the captains of the men’s and women’s teams respectively.
An official send-off ceremony was held at MG University, where Vice Chancellor Dr. C.T. Aravindakumar unveiled the team jerseys. Registrar Dr. K. Jayachandran handed over the kits.
