The School of Environmental Sciences (SES) at Mahatma Gandhi University spearheads the university’s commitment to sustainability, environmental stewardship, and climate resilience. As the nodal centre for all green initiatives, SES integrates cutting-edge research, academic programmes, and community outreach to promote sustainable campus operations and ecological consciousness. From coordinating waste management and biodiversity conservation projects to leading energy audits, carbon footprint assessments, and green infrastructure planning, SES ensures that sustainability is embedded in every aspect of university life. The School also drives student and faculty engagement through awareness campaigns, eco-clubs, and collaborative projects aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With its vision of a carbon-neutral, resource-efficient campus, the School of Environmental Sciences continues to guide Mahatma Gandhi University in setting benchmarks for sustainable higher education and contributing meaningfully to the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings.

Mahatma Gandhi University, as a premier institution of higher learning in Kerala, is well aware of its responsibility to environmental issues and well-being, as well as the role in education, research, policy formation, and information exchange required for a sustained environmental campaign and activities. As per the NAAC advisory, the present audit has been conducted by a NABCB-accredited external professional audit group (IRCLASS Systems and Solutions Pvt. Ltd.), aided by the effective support of the Advanced Center of Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (ACESSD).

Dr. Sibu Simon

Associate Professor at the School of Environmental Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, serves as the Nodal Officer for Sustainability under the UI GreenMetric initiative. With a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Charles University, Prague, and extensive international research experience across institutes such as Masaryk University (Czech Republic), King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Saudi Arabia), Ghent University (Belgium), and IST Austria, Dr. Simon brings global scientific expertise to local sustainability action. His research focuses on plant-environment interactions, strigolactone biology, and nutrient stress adaptation, supported by prestigious fellowships including the Marie Sklodowska-Curie and KSCSTE K-BiRE awards. As a passionate advocate for sustainable science and campus greening, Dr. Simon integrates advanced environmental research with actionable sustainability practices, fostering an eco-conscious academic culture at MGU. His leadership ensures that the university’s sustainability roadmap aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global best practices.

Dr. Mahesh Mohan

Associate Professor and Director of the School of Environmental Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, is a leading environmental scientist with over two decades of experience in research, teaching, and environmental governance. As the Nodal Officer for Implementing the National Forest Policy and Green Protocol Officer of the University, he plays a pivotal role in fostering sustainable campus development, biodiversity conservation, and carbon-neutral initiatives. Dr. Mohan has led multiple national and international research expeditions, including several Indian Arctic Missions, and has published extensively on mercury pollution, climate change, forest ecology, and microplastics. Recipient of the Paristhithimithram Award (2022) by the Government of Kerala, his leadership extends to directing the Interuniversity Centre for Organic Farming and Sustainable Agriculture (IUCOFSA) and the International Centre for Polar Studies (ICPS). Dr. Mohan’s vision integrates science, policy, and sustainability to create a greener, more resilient Mahatma Gandhi University.
