University permitted student to write exam based on High Court order: Registrar

Dr. Bismi Gopalakrishnan, Registrar of Mahatma Gandhi University, clarified in response to news reports that the permission granted to Sreejith Subhash, a student of St. Aloysius College, Edathua, to write examinations was based on a directive from the High Court.

Sreejith, a CBCS B.Sc. Mathematics (Model 1) student, had approached the High Court and secured an interim order after being dismissed from the college. As a result, he was able to write his fifth and sixth semester examinations at St. Aloysius College, Edathua, and Mar Thoma College, Thiruvalla, respectively.

The student later submitted a request to the Vice-Chancellor, seeking special permission to write the internal examinations for these semesters and to participate in the project viva for the sixth semester. In light of the High Court’s directive, the Syndicate, in its meeting on May 14, decided to allow Sreejith to write the internal examinations and participate in the project viva. The Syndicate also instructed the college principal to implement this decision.

Since the required examinations were not scheduled, Sreejith requested special arrangements for conducting the internal examinations and project viva. The University subsequently sought an explanation from the college regarding the delay in implementing the Syndicate’s decision. As the college’s response did not confirm compliance, the matter was resubmitted to the Syndicate for further consideration.

To address the issue, the Syndicate’s Standing Committee on Student Welfare and Grievance Redressal appointed an inquiry commission comprising Syndicate members to investigate and submit a report. However, the college principal failed to attend the commission’s hearing. The Syndicate then reviewed and accepted the commission’s findings.

In its meeting on November 14, the Syndicate directed the college principal to conduct the fifth and sixth semester internal examinations and the sixth semester project viva, publish the results, and inform the University within one month. Additionally, the Syndicate decided to bring to the college management’s attention the principal’s previous failure to implement University directives. The Syndicate warned that repeated non-compliance could lead to the withdrawal of the statutory approval for the principal’s appointment, the Registrar stated.
