U3A: Pioneering New Horizons in Lifelong Learning

The University of the Third Age (U3A) movement at Mahatma Gandhi University is continuously forging ahead with innovative models, and its latest endeavour, the heartwarming ”Confluence of Generations” event held at BCM College, Kottayam, stands as a testament to this commitment. This extraordinary gathering seamlessly brought together senior citizens and youth, resulting in a truly memorable day for all who participated.

The event saw the active involvement of 100 senior citizens from various parts of the state, alongside 100 MSW students from both BCM College and Mahatma Gandhi University. The youth willingly set aside their daily routines and even their mobile phones to sit alongside the seniors, eagerly absorbing their life experiences and knowledge.

The interactions commenced with pairs, each consisting of a member from both generations, introducing themselves and sharing their life stories. These pairs later coalesced into larger groups, with the younger generation taking the lead in discussing their takeaways from the initial interactions, while the seniors listened attentively. The profound exchanges left an indelible mark on the students, with many describing the day as an unforgettable and transformative experience.

This exceptional programme was jointly organised by The Inter University Centre for Disability Studies (IUCDS), Mahatma Gandhi University, and BCM College in collaboration with U3A. The event was inaugurated by the Honorable Vice-Chancellor, Dr. C.T. Aravindakumar, who also honoured the esteemed senior members of U3A. Dr. P.T. Baburaj, the Director of IUCDS, presided over the event.

Mahatma Gandhi University proudly holds the distinction of being the first university in India to establish a U3A unit—an international movement dedicated to providing education and intellectual stimulation primarily to retired community members as they embark on the third phase of their lives. Today, U3A units affiliated with MGU are operational in all 14 districts of Kerala, extending their influence and impact throughout the state.

This event exemplifies MGU’s unwavering commitment to fostering intergenerational connections and promoting lifelong learning, further solidifying its role as a beacon of intellectual and societal advancement.
