Dreams are now on the cusp of becoming a reality at Mahatma Gandhi University, where sports enthusiasts, including aspiring athletes and those pursuing higher education in sports, are seeing new opportunities to realise their ambitions. The university’s long-cherished dream is on the verge of materialising with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the University and the Sports Kerala Foundation for the construction of the Susan Mable Indoor Stadium and Sports Complex on the university grounds.
Dr. R. Bindu, the Minister of Higher Education, inaugurated the MOU signing ceremony at the university campus. She emphasised that the new facilities will significantly enhance the university’s sports performance and facilitate the implementation of new sports-related courses.
The ceremony was presided over by V.N. Vasavan, the Minister for Cooperation and Registration, and the MOU was received by Mr. V. Abdhurahiman, the Minister for Sports. This 57-crore state government project is set to be funded through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).
Since its inception in 1983, Mahatma Gandhi University has been at the forefront of promoting sports activities. The university has nurtured 11 Olympians in various sports disciplines and consistently excelled in national and inter-university championships.
Looking ahead, the university envisions the development of new sports infrastructure as a crucial step in advancing its academic and research pursuits in the field of physical education and sports sciences. The proposed developments include a 400-meter synthetic track, a multi-purpose indoor stadium, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a sports hostel and an academic complex, all of which will serve as invaluable assets to the university.
