Research is not merely about finding solutions-Prof.D’Souza

Professor Rohan D’Souza of Kyoto University delivered a thought-provoking lecture at the Centre for Technology and Human Development Studies (CTHDS), School of Gandhian Thought and Development Studies, highlighting the enduring relevance of social science doctorates in a world increasingly dominated by Artificial Intelligence. Prof. D’Souza argued that AI lacks consciousness and critical thinking, emphasising that research is “not merely about finding solutions; it’s a problem-constituting exercise.” He cautioned against ‘platform universities’ that offer fragmented knowledge and emphasised that traditional public universities play a crucial role in fostering civic values alongside academic excellence, distinguishing them from profit-driven corporate institutions.

Prof. D’Souza warned that algorithms and mathematical approaches could overshadow critical perspectives.  He urged universities to reinvent themselves to avoid becoming mere data repositories for AI systems. Dr. Rajesh Many, Director of CTHDS, delivered the welcome and introductory address, while Prof. Noushad P P, Director of School of Gandhian Thought and Development Studies, introduced the session. The event was chaired by Dr. Rajesh Komath, with research scholar Prinyanka Rajeev delivering the vote of thanks. The lecture drew active participation from eminent academics including Prof. P Sanal Mohan, along with national and international research scholars from various schools of MGU.

The event highlighted the continuing importance of human-centred, interdisciplinary learning in an increasingly technology-driven world, reinforcing the vital role of social sciences in academic research.
