MGU3A to be Presented as a Model at AIUTA International Conference

The Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) unit of the global organisation University of the Third Age (U3A) has been selected to be showcased as a model from India at the international conference of the Association of International Universities of the Third Age (AIUTA), hosted by Hong Kong Metropolitan University from March 31.

A 22-member delegation, led by Vice-Chancellor Dr. C.T. Aravindakumar and Syndicate member Dr. K.R. Baiju, will represent the university at the event. MGU3A Director Dr. Tony Thomas will present the report, while mentor Dr. Thomas Abraham will lead discussions.

The opening day of the conference will feature a special performance of the MGU3A theme song, composed by Kollam District Coordinator Mangalashwari, as a Thiruvathira Kali dance.

Despite U3A’s presence in over 85 countries, MGU3A stands out for its unique psycho-social intervention model, said U3A Global President François Vellas.

U3A, which strives to make the third phase of life enriching for senior citizens, follows two main models worldwide: lifelong learning, common in Europe, and senior social clubs, widely seen in the UK. MGU3A integrates both approaches while incorporating the Theme-Centred Interaction (TCI) method, making it distinct. The Butterfly Foundation for TCI International collaborates in its operations, with TCI facilitators managing activities at the district level.

Since its launch in March 2023, MGU3A has grown to over 150 units across the state, with more than 2,500 members. Membership is open to individuals aged 55 and above.

To prepare for the international conference, a review meeting will be held on February 16 at Nagaripuram, Ottapalam, in Palakkad district. The meeting will be attended by Vice-Chancellor Dr. C.T. Aravindakumar, along with district coordinators and unit leaders from Palakkad, Thrissur, and Malappuram.
