Climate change workshop: Experts suggest extensive preparation for future challenges

As part of World Environment Day celebrations, a state-level workshop was convened at Mahatma Gandhi University, jointly organised by the Centre for the Study of Climate Change (KSCSTE) under the State Council of Science, Technology, and Environment, the Environment Information Awareness Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP), and the University’s School of Environmental Sciences. Experts emphasised the urgent need for extensive preparations to confront the challenges posed by climate change in the future.

The workshop underscored the importance of equipping the younger generation with an in-depth knowledge of evolving climate conditions and survival strategies, encouraging them to effectively meet these challenges. Adequate funding is crucial for carrying out scientific projects aimed at ensuring resilient infrastructure, health, water security, and sustainable living conditions in the face of climate change.

The programme was inaugurated by Prof. K. P. Sudheer, Executive Vice President of KSCSTE and Ex-officio Principal Secretary of the S&T Department, Government of Kerala. Dr. Beena Mathew, Vice Chancellor in-charge, presided over the event. Dr. Sekhar Lukose Kuriakose, Member Secretary of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, and Dr. E. Sreekumar, Director of the Advanced Virology Institute, delivered lectures.

University Syndicate Member, Dr. K. R. Baiju, Director of the School of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Mahesh Mohan, Principal Scientist at KSCSTE, Dr. P. Harinarayanan, and Senior Scientist at the Institute for Climate Change Studies, Dr. C.C. Bajish, also shared their insights.
