A total of 1,370 senior citizens gathered yesterday at MKH Auditorium, Thrippanachi, Palakkad, to join the international initiative of U3A (University of the Third Age), which aims to ensure a joyful and meaningful life during the third stage of human life.

Inaugurating the event, MP Harris Beeran said that U3A opens a world of opportunities for senior citizens, challenging the common notion that old age means retirement and loneliness. Mahatma Gandhi University Vice-Chancellor Dr. C.T. Aravindakumar officially declared Pulpatta as a Complete U3A Village. Pulpatta Grama Panchayat President P.C. Abdurahman presided over the function.

Dr. C. Thomas Abraham, U3A mentor of Mahatma Gandhi University, presented the theme. A. Abdurahman, U3A Malappuram District Coordinator, presented the report. District Panchayat members Adv. P.V. Manaf and Raihanath Kurumadan, Vice President Nusrin Mol, MGU U3A Director Dr. Tony K. Thomas, Block Panchayat member Haridas Pulpatta, other public representatives and officials also participated.

Participants noted that U3A’s initiatives offer great hope for senior citizens. Mahatma Gandhi University was the first university in India to start U3A, which helps senior citizens to use their knowledge and expertise for the benefit of society and stay socially active. MGU U3A has units in all districts across the state.
