
Kottayam, August 24: The inauguration of newly constructed hostels and the foundation stone laying for the International Students’ Hostel at Mahatma Gandhi University campus will be held tomorrow (August 25).
The function will begin at 2.30 p.m. at the University Assembly Hall. Dr. R. Bindu, Minister for Higher Education, will inaugurate the programme. V.N. Vasavan, Minister for Cooperation, Devaswom, and Ports, will preside. Member of Parliament Francis George will deliver the keynote address.
The Higher Education Minister will formally open the state’s first hostel for transgender students and lay the foundation stone for the International Students’ Hostel, a project worth ₹34.9 crore. Minister V.N. Vasavan will inaugurate the extension block of the Nila Students’ Hostel, designed to accommodate 80 students.
Vice-Chancellor Dr. C.T. Aravindakumar, Syndicate member Adv. Reji Zachariah, Registrar Dr. Bismi Gopalakrishnan, and Department Students’ Union Chairperson V.T. Vinaya will address the gathering. Athirampuzha Grama Panchayat President Jose Joseph Ambalakkulam, District Panchayat member Dr. Rosamma Soni, Ettumanoor Block Panchayat member James Kurian, and Athirampuzha Grama Panchayat member Joshi Elanjiyil will also attend.
The Nila Hostel extension, constructed at a cost of ₹57 lakh under the State Government’s 2024–2025 annual plan, and the transgender students’ hostel, set up at a cost of ₹13.67 lakh, are among the key projects being opened.
The International Students’ Hostel, funded by KIIFB, will provide accommodation for foreign students and other university students. Construction is expected to be completed by March 2026.
