Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) has been granted Category 1 status by the University Grants Commission (UGC), marking a significant milestone in its academic journey. This elite recognition grants MGU extensive autonomy to launch new initiatives and establish institutions without prior UGC approval, making it the first university in the state to achieve this distinction.
The university earned Category 1 status based on its A++ grade and CGPA of 3.61 in the fourth cycle of reaccreditation by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), as well as its consistent ranking in the Times Higher Education global rankings.
The UGC approved this status during its 588th meeting held on the 13th of this month, following a thorough review of MGU’s application. Only 21 state universities across India have been awarded this prestigious classification.
With Category 1 status, MGU gains unparalleled academic freedom under Clause 4 of the UGC’s 2018 regulations. This opens doors for innovative curriculum development, establishment of off-campus centres, new study departments, constituent colleges, science parks, and other academic ventures—all without external approvals.
A key advantage of this autonomy is the ability to offer distance education programmes independently, eliminating the need for UGC approval. This further strengthens MGU’s ability to expand its educational reach and impact, reinforcing its position as a leader in higher education.
