Following the high acceptance of M.Com and MBA programmes equivalent to regular postgraduate programmes, Mahatma Gandhi University is expanding its online programmes. As announced by Vice Chancellor Dr. C.T. Aravindakumar, admissions are now open for B.Com (Honours) and MA in English Language and Literature under the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE). Prospective students can submit their applications through the University’s admission portal until November 15.
CDOE currently has approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) to conduct 13 online programmes, comprising 10 postgraduate programmes and 3 undergraduate programmes. Notably, M G University is the only State University in Kerala with UGC approval to offer online programmes. The University launched the M.Com programme in 2022 and MBA in 2023. Other approved programmes will be introduced soon.Online classes are conducted by teachers with UGC-prescribed qualifications. MGU offers courses at reasonable fees compared to other universities in the country.
Following the introduction of four-year Honours undergraduate programmes in the state this academic year, the University applied for approval from the UGC Distance Education Bureau to conduct online Honours programmes. Securing approval this year marks a significant achievement, said the Vice Chancellor. Mahatma Gandhi University is the only institution in the state permitted to conduct these online Honours programmes, equivalent to regular Honours programmes.
The four-year programme structure allows students to earn a degree after completing three years with the required credits. Additionally, CDOE has also launched online Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC) for first-year undergraduate students enrolled in the Graduate School and affiliated colleges. The initial phase of AEC offers language courses in German, French, and Tamil, providing students with a diverse range of learning opportunities.
The AEC programmes are designed to maintain high quality, with live interactive sessions, recorded video classes, and simplified e-learning materials. CDOE aims to offer ability enhancement, skill enhancement, value addition, and minor courses online to students across all universities in the state during the next phase.
The University has also established a robust Student Life Cycle Management System, supported by a software platform developed by Tata Consultancy Services. This allows working professionals and students pursuing other courses to join the CDOE’s online courses. By leveraging advanced technology to facilitate online learning, the University is setting a timely and exemplary transformation in higher education in the state, as stated by Dr. Aravindakumar. Dr. Joji Alex, University Syndicate member, and Dr. P.P. Noushad, Director of CDOE, were also present at the press conference.
