Mission and Objectives


The objective of the School of International Relations and Politics (SIRP) is to provide the highest quality post-graduate and MPhil/PhD programmes in the frontier areas of Political Science, International Relations and Human Rights shaped by the distinctive perspectives of the Faculty of the School. To provide education of the highest quality with the emphasis on mutual respect, social harmony, sustainable development and world peace, SIRP's mission keeps in perspective the dynamic role of a caring Faculty committed to creating an open and cooperative learning environment. The teachinglearning process at SIRP is shaped by a view of higher education as a process of developing a critical faculty on questions of polity, culture, economy and international society so that the students will become involved learners. The School also provides wide-ranging opportunities for students and faculty to interact with each other as persons, to learn from each other in a cooperative community, an important aspect of which is collaborative student/faculty research.

The School has been functioning with the principal goal of strengthening new and critical areas of enquiry in the disciplines of Political Science (PS), International Relations (IR), Public Policy & Governance (PPG) and Human Rights (HR). The School also seeks to establish co-operative ventures with client institutions and centres in India and abroad. The mission of the School is to emerge as an institution of excellence in the study and research in the realm of Political Science, International Relations and Human Rights. The faculty members have maintained high academic profiles in the areas of their specialisation by engaging with critical questions, in both theoretical and empirical aspects. The teachers and students have made substantial contribution to various national and international journals, besides writing books and articles in edited volumes and bringing out Working Papers/ Monographs/Occasional Papers etc. Faculty members of the School secured Major Research Projects of the UGC/ICSSR and other institutions of research and learning.

The MA, MPhil and PhD programmes currently offered in the School have been designed in such a way as to further the goals and objectives envisaged in the very institutionalisation of the School. The academic programmes have been conceptualised with the aim of invigorating the frontier areas of PS, IR, PPG and HR. The School has also kept in perspective the developments that have taken place in the global political, economic, and strategic landscape. The academic programmes in the School have been periodically monitored/reviewed and redesigned with a view to strengthening the interdisciplinary realm of study and research. The School has received, from time to time, adequate academic inputs by way of feedback from the students, faculty members, researchers, members of Board of Studies and examinations, as well as from a cross-section of universities,colleges and centres of excellence in India and abroad.

The library of the School, one of the first computerised libraries in the university, has a collection of more than 7000 titles with the most recently published books in IR, HR and PPG. The School also enjoys the support facilities of the nearby University Library, which is one of the best in South India in terms of latest collections and services. The range and quality of the journals subscribed in the realm of PS, IR and HR are noteworthy.

The School has evolved a learner-friendly, need-based instructional/learning system to equip the students and research scholars to meet the emerging challenges. The instructional pattern, apart from its information-based mode, inculcates values of theory-related studies, selfreflexivity and policy-alternatives. While classroom lectures continue to be an essential prerequisite for the imparting of knowledge, periodic seminars, book/article review sessions and group interfaces provide the necessary intellectual climate for learning and research in the School. The School has developed very effective, transparent and rigorous mechanisms with the participation of teachers to assess the cognitive ability of students and research scholars as well as to ascertain the level of knowledge, intelligence and articulation they have acquired over a period of time.


Periodic review sessions are arranged, group-wise and individual, to monitor the levels of gap and to suggest remedial measures to fill it. The learner-friendly instructional system seeks to foster cognitive-analytical skill of students and, wherever necessary, provides space for the empowerment of the disadvantaged in the learning process through informal counselling and tutorial interfaces.

The School has organised a number of academic programmes such as refresher courses, workshops, colloquia, symposiums, seminars, conferences, extension programmes etc with a view to imparting knowledge in frontier areas of PS, IR and HR. The faculty members of the School have been offering consultancy services for a variety of institutions and centres keeping in perspective the overall objectives of the School. The services along these lines have been envisaged with a vision of social accountability. The press, both print and electronic media, research institutions working in tandem with various social movements and groups have received substantial inputs from the School.

The School has established specific academic engagements and exchanges with several institutions and universities in India and abroad. These national and international linkages were widened during the last five years. The institutions with which such linkages have been developed are; Institute of Political Studies (IEP), Rennes, France; the Institute of Political Studies, Bordeaux, France; Institute of Chinese Studies, Jinan University, China, Department of Strategic and Regional Studies, University of Jammu, J&K; Earlham College, Indiana, USA; London School of Economics and Political Science; Ecole des Etudes Haute en Sciences Sociale, Paris; Department of Political Science,University of Geneva; Central European University, Budapest; Department of Political Science, Bucknell University; USA; University of Delaware, USA; Cairo University, Egypt; Hebrew University, Jerusalem; Fulbright Programmes through the US Educational Foundation in India; Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi;; East Asian Institute, National University of Singapore; Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi; Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi; Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi; Centre for Strategic and Regional Studies, University of Jammu; Centre for Global Studies, Sikkim Central University; Centre for Trade and Development (CENTAD), New Delhi; Delhi Policy Group, New Delhi; Department of Political Science, University of Hyderabad; Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram, New Delhi and the other Universities in Kerala.

The School places great emphasis on research in the frontier areas of PS, IR and HR. The research culture in the School promotes scholastic engagements in an interdisciplinary matrix. The School keeps in perspective the policy implications of social research and encourages such themes as are relevant to the society at large. The priority areas are Indian Diaspora Studies, Intellectual Property Rights, West Asian Studies, Cross-National Communication in South Asia, Trade, Development and Governance, Strategic and Security Studies. The School enjoys considerable freedom in carrying on independent research and the faculty members have profusely published in national and international journals. These writings have been held in high esteem in the academic realm and commented upon positively in policy-making circles. The School has launched innovative academic activities like Scholar-in-Residence Programme and initiated Diplomat Lecture Series. Several scholars and diplomats visited the School and offered special lectures on critical themes of international relations. The School publishes two international peer-reviewed academic journals Indian Journal of Politics and International Relations and South Asian Journal of Diplomacy.
