With a vision to consolidate the existing and to pay focus attention to the frontier areas of Environmental Science, the University has Established the School of Environmental Sciences (SES) in1995 as a Centre of learning for advanced studies in different branches of environmental science. The major mandate of the School is to develop appropriate technologies and skilled human resource for sustainable utilization, management and conservation of natural resources.

Academic Programmes

The School has been established as a centre of learning for advanced studies in the following areas of environmental sciences- Ecology, biodiversity and conservation biology, natural resource management, wetland and mountain ecosystem, Environmental of physical systems, environmental toxicology, environmental biotechnology, environment including policies, environmental auditing, energy auditing,Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS). The six divisions of the school are listed below:

• Environmental Chemistry • Ecology, Resource Conservation and Management division • Environmental Analysis division • Environmental Microbiology and toxicology division • Environmental Biotechnology and Waste management division • Remote Sensing and GIS division

The school is offering regular courses such as MSc,MPhil and PhD, programmes besides short term courses.

Regular Courses

• MSc Environment Science and Management • M.Phil Environment Management • PhD Programme

School offers PhD programmes in Environmental Stress Studies, Environmental Biology, Biodiversity and Conservation Biology, Biodiversity Characterization,Aerobiology and Allergy, Vegetation Analysis through RS and GIS and Wetland Biodiversity, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Biotechnology and Solid Waste Management, Aquatic Microbiology, Microbial Toxicology, Bioremediation and Environmental Impact Assessment.

Short-term courses

• Geo Information Science and Technology (Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS) • Digital Photogrammetry and Digital Image Processing • Water and waste water analysis • Air and sound analysis techniques • Biodiversity Analysis Techniques • Polynological and Pollen Analysis Techniques.

Facilities

• Laboratories

The school has a well equipped laboratory and research facilities for water, air, soil and sound pollution analysis, toxicological and waste management studies, and biodiversity, wetland and mountain studies. Apart from the infrastructure cited, the School has a full-fledged computer lab with necessary software packages for ecological and environmental modelling studies.

• Information systems

The Centralized Remote Sensing and GIS Facility in SES is the pioneering facility for RS and GIS in the Universities in Kerala established with technical and financial support from ISRO, Department of Space, and Government of India. The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art software for GIS, Photogrammetric and Image Processing and equipment and peripherals including the powerful Graphic Workstations, PCs and Servers.

• Library

The school has a well-equipped library which contains various books, journals, theses and dissertations with research information on water, air, soil and sound pollution analysis, toxicological and waste management studies, biodiversity, wetland and mountain studies.Free access to E-Journals under the UGC-lnfonet Programme is also available.

National/International linkages

The department has established linkages with various National/international institutions such as Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS), Thiruvananthapuram; Regional Research Laboratory (RRL ) ,Thiruvananthapuram, Tropical Botanical Garden and Research Institute (TBGRI), Thiruvananthapuram, M.S. Extension

he school has taken up several innovative and socially relevant extension activities which includes the Jeevaka Live Laboratory in the Campus. The 'Rainwater Harvesting for Humanity' intervention in association with Brown University USA enabled 130 families in Achinakom village, Kottayam to have drinking water throughout the year.
