The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, functioning with the assistance of MahatmaGandhiUniversity in the University campus, commenced its activities in May 1990. The functions of the Guidance Bureau is monitored by an Advisory committee under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor. The advisory committee consists of 11 members including the Vice Chancellor. The 1st meeting of the advisory committee was held on 3rd April 1997 and the last meeting on 28th February 2009.
The Bureau has a Chief, a Deputy Chief, a Clerk and a Peon. Dr. M. Padmanabhan, Professor, School of Chemical Sciences is the Chief and Sri. V. Krishnakumar, Employment Officer is the Deputy Chief. Since Dr. Padmanabhan proceeded on leave, Dr. A.P Thomas, Director, School of Environmental Science took over the charge as Chief from 16.1.2008. The Deputy Chief, Clerk and Peon are State Government employees. The Chief is a senior professor of any departments of the University who is nominated by the Syndicate.
The Bureau is now functioning in the new building from 11.6.2008. The new building has two class rooms on upstairs, a library, office room, rooms for Chief and Deputy Chief in the down stairs.
Bureau collects information regarding job opportunities, job oriented new courses, institutions which imparts professional courses.
One of the major functions of this bureau is to conduct coaching classes for the competitive examinations conducting at the state and national levels. We give awareness to the trends and techniques resorted in the examinations to evaluate student’s intelligence, problem solving capacity, knowledge of the subject etc. Individual guidance is also given here to the candidate to choose professional courses and jobs by evaluating their talents, interest, skill, aptitude, family background etc. The Bureau conducts coaching classes for the UGC/CSIR NET examinations (with the financial assistance of UGC). Bureau also conducts coaching programmes for the different examinations conducted by the various recruiting agencies like Public Service Commission, Banks, Staff Selection Commission etc. Admission to the above courses are often limited to 40 students. This year we have conducted 12 such coaching programmes and 424 students got benefited.
Another work of the bureau is to equip the candidates to face various types of interviews. Discussions and mock interviews help them to project their communication skill development, intellectual development, professional development, social skill development etc. Deputy Chief has conducted 49 group discussions this year and 351students participated in the programme.
Bureau also conducts one day Career Seminars in colleges to create awareness among the students on career opportunities and skill development. Seminars would focus mainly on career trends in India and abroad, opportunities for higher studies, how to face an interview and also on personality development. Eminent resource persons are invited for the purpose. The Bureau conducted 04 such career seminars, 03 at different colleges and one in the University campus during this calendar year. 435 students got benefit from these seminars.
The coaching programme exclusively for SC/ST and minority community candidates to prepare them for the Civil Services Preliminary examination with UGC assistance started on 17.11.2008 and continued up to April 2009. One of the participants got selected for the main examination.
Deputy Chief visits at least 3 colleges under the jurisdiction of the University as well as 2 Town Employment Exchanges, a Juvenile home and an I.T.I every month for delivering career talks. Career talk mainly focus on employment trends, competitive examinations, interview techniques, job oriented courses etc. This year Deputy Chief delivered 23 career talks and 1729 students got benefited by this programme. 123 students were given Individual Guidance by the Deputy Chief during this year.
Bureau in association with NirmalaCollege, Moovattupuzha successfully conducted a Campus Recruitment Drive for the final year as well as the passed out degree students under the jurisdiction of the University on 24th and 25th of January 2009. A total of 4500 students registered their names for the drive. 27 companies from different sectors participated in the recruitment drive. A Job fair for the Wipro BPO was also conducted in the University Campus on 16th and 17th of September 2009. A total of 300 students got registered for the programme and 11 candidates were selected after all the elimination process. Due to lack of good communication skills of the participants they were not able to select more candidates.
Professionally qualified can register their names with this bureau for their better prospects. During this year 04 candidates registered their names. A total of 295 job seekers have been registered until this date.
This Bureau has a functional library and it has at present 546 books and other study materials. Publications like the Hindu, Kerala Gazette, Employment News, PSC Bulletin, Thozhil Vartha, Thozhil Veedhi, University News of AIU, Competition Success Review etc are currently subscribed and are readily made available for reference to the visitors.
