Climate Change Programmes
Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) is deeply committed to addressing the global challenge of climate change through education, research, and community engagement. Recognizing the urgent need for climate literacy and sustainable adaptation, the University integrates climate change awareness and action into its academic programmes, research priorities, and extension activities, in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13 – Climate Action).

Academic Programmes
MGU incorporates climate change education across various disciplines, ensuring that students gain both theoretical understanding and practical exposure. Courses such as “Climate Change and Disaster Risk Reduction” (B.Sc. Zoology Honours) and “Aquaculture Ecosystem Management and Climate Change” address topics like global warming, biodiversity impacts, disaster resilience, and sustainable natural resource management. These programmes cultivate scientific thinking and equip students to develop innovative solutions for climate-related challenges.

Research and Innovation
The University’s Advanced Centre of Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (ACESSD) spearheads climate-focused research through its dedicated Climate Change Studies Division. Research projects explore critical areas including soil carbon dynamics, greenhouse gas emissions, forest carbon sequestration, and plant adaptation under drought stress. Interdisciplinary collaborations between departments further advance knowledge in renewable energy, ecosystem resilience, and sustainable resource use, contributing to evidence-based climate policy and planning.

Outreach and Community Engagement
Beyond academics and research, MGU actively engages with local communities to foster climate resilience. The School of Environmental Sciences organizes field-based outreach programmes on ecosystem restoration, rainwater harvesting, and wetland conservation, supported by organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Awareness campaigns, workshops, and observances like World Environment Day encourage public participation and promote behavioural change toward sustainability and climate preparedness.
Through its holistic approach, Mahatma Gandhi University demonstrates that higher education can be a powerful driver of climate action. By combining education, research, and community partnerships, the University empowers students, scholars, and citizens to act responsibly and collaboratively in building a climate-resilient and sustainable future.
