\"\"<\/a>Malappuram: Edavanna Grama Panchayat in Malappuram district has been officially declared a senior-friendly panchayat, following months of initiatives aimed at promoting the well-being and active participation of senior citizens, led by the University of the Third Age (MGU3A) of Mahatma Gandhi University.<\/p>\n

The declaration was made at a function held at the T.P. Royal Plaza Auditorium at Chembakuth on Thursday, October 1 2026, observed as International Day of Older Persons. Public Works Department Minister P.K. Basheer inaugurated the programme, which was presided over by Malappuram District Panchayat President Jabbar Haji. MGU3A Director Dr. Tony K. Thomas formally declared Edavanna a senior-friendly panchayat. A poetry collection by MGU3A member Vijayalakshmi was also released at the function.<\/p>\n

As part of the initiative, 48 MGU3A units were formed across the 24 wards of Edavanna Grama Panchayat. Special workshops were organised for members under the guidance of trained facilitators. Regular interventions focusing on mental and physical well-being included memory exercises, creative activities and other programmes designed to encourage active participation.<\/p>\n

The units meet twice a month, providing members with opportunities for social interaction and continued learning. Platforms have also been created for senior citizens to showcase their talents, with members who demonstrate outstanding performance being specially recognised.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The University of the Third Age (U3A) is a global initiative that promotes the active participation of senior citizens in society. Mahatma Gandhi University is the first university in India to implement the programme. The activities of MGU3A are structured around the developmental psychology approach of \u201cTheme-Centred Interaction\u201d. The initiative seeks to promote the physical, mental and social well-being of senior citizens while harnessing their experience, knowledge and skills for community development.<\/p>\n
