\"\"<\/a>Caring for the elderly is deeply rooted in our culture, said Kerala Legislative Assembly Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan. He was speaking as the chief guest at an international seminar on the care and welfare of persons living with dementia, held at Mahatma Gandhi University.<\/p>\n

He said that developed countries have established dedicated centres and systems for the welfare and care of the elderly. Such care systems should be further strengthened in Kerala while preserving the family-centred traditions and distinctive characteristics of our society, he added.<\/p>\n

The seminar was jointly organised by the Centre for Yoga and Naturopathy and the Alzheimer\u2019s and Related Disorders Society of India. University Syndicate member Dr. Jobin Chamakala inaugurated the programme. Registrar Prof. (Dr.) Binu George Varghese presided over the function.<\/p>\n

Syndicate member Dr. Thomas Kuruvila, Honorary Director of the Centre for Yoga and Naturopathy Dr. C. R. Harilakshmindra Kumar, Head of the Department of Social Work, St. Joseph\u2019s College, Moolamattom, Dr. Mathew Kanamala, Chair Professor and Chairperson of the Dr. Paulos Mar Gregorios Chair at the university Fr. (Dr.) K. M. George, President of the Alzheimer\u2019s and Related Disorders Society of India Dr. P. Nainan Kurian, Vice President K. C. Varghese, and Anurag Nair, a student of the Centre for Yoga and Naturopathy, also spoke.<\/p>\n

The inaugural session was followed by presentations of research papers and panel discussions on various aspects of dementia care. Dr. C. T. Sudheer Kumar, an expert in dementia care, delivered the Dr. Jacob Roy Memorial Pearl Jubilee Lecture. Varkey Kurian, M. J. Sebastian, Dr. Nainan Kurian and Sr. Dr. Joan Chungappara, who have served the Alzheimer\u2019s and Related Disorders Society of India for many years, were honoured at the function.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
