Satheesh Centre for Remote Sensing and GIS and the OpenStreetMap Kerala community, introduced participants to GIS, geospatial technologies, open data and digital mapping. It also highlighted how local knowledge can help document places, communities and landscapes that are changing or at risk of being lost.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Mahesh Mohan, Director, School of Environmental Sciences, while Dean Dr. Baiju K. R. launched the official website of SoTM Kerala 2026 (kerala.stateofthemap.in/). University alumnus and OpenStreetMap Kerala member Mr. Jaisen Nedumpala led the Mapping Party.

Dr. Abin Varghese, Co-ordinator of the Dr. R. Satheesh Centre for Remote Sensing and GIS, emphasised the importance of community-generated open geospatial data in promoting research, education and disaster management. He noted that initiatives such as these can encourage students and researchers to engage with open mapping and geospatial technologies.

The event also underlined the role of community mapping in documenting areas affected by disasters, recalling mapping efforts during the 2018 and 2019 floods in Kerala. Through the Mapping Party, Mahatma Gandhi University aims to encourage students and the wider community to become active contributors to open maps while preserving valuable knowledge about places and landscapes.

Mahatma Gandhi University hosted a Mapping Party as part of the activities leading up to State of the Map (SoTM) Kerala 2026, bringing together students, researchers, faculty members, mapping enthusiasts and OpenStreetMap contributors to promote community driven mapping and open geospatial data.
