Football, in particular, teaches the values of teamwork, discipline, respect, and hope that societies need now more than ever. When the world turns its eyes to the FIFA World Cup, it celebrates not only a tournament but also the dreams, dedication, and the institutions that nurture the future of this game.

For over four decades, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala has been a shining example of how sport can shape lives and inspire excellence. Since its establishment in 1983, MGU has built a rich football tradition, producing outstanding players who have represented Kerala and India at various levels.

Our alma mater’s footballers, such as K. T. Chacko, Alex Saji, Mashoor Shareef Thangalakath, Muhammed Ajsal, Muhammed Aiman, Sreekuttan, K. A. Anson, Firoz Shereef, and Akbar carried its legacy into national stages. The university has also contributed more than one hundred players to Kerala’s Santosh Trophy teams, playing a significant role in the state’s football success.

MGU’s achievements at the university level are equally impressive. The university has remained among the top performers in the All India Inter-University Football Championship in recent years and won the Khelo India University Games football title in 2021, continuing to be a consistent force in Indian university football.

What makes MGU special is its ability to combine academic excellence with sporting ambition. For countless young players, especially those from rural backgrounds, the university has provided a pathway to growth, opportunity, and recognition. The university has an excellent football ground, along with other sports facilities in the campus. It runs a masters’ course in physical education in the Kottayam campus and also oversees the courses run by affiliated colleges.

As the FIFA World Cup reminds us that great footballing nations are built through strong grassroots systems, Mahatma Gandhi University offers an inspiring Indian model of that vision.
