Having identified the growing need for well trained computer professionals in the country, the University started the School of Computer Sciences in the year 1990. The School enjoys considerable repute as a centre of learning, a reputation matched by a stimulating intellectual atmosphere. The School has well equipped laboratories with a wide range of computer facilities including smart class rooms, video conferencing facility and virtual class room. The postgraduate programmes of the School focus on strengthening the students knowledge in almost all areas of computer science and on exposing them to the issues involved in the development of computer systems. Curriculum revision is done regularly to keep the programmes up to date.
• MSc Computer Science (Second Level admitting only graduates in Computer Science & Applications)
• MTech in Computer Science and Technology with Specialisation in Communication and Network Technology
• M Phil in Computer Science
The thrust areas of study and research includes Pattern Recognition, Image Processing and Computer Graphics, Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Soft Computing, Data Mining, Advanced and Wireless Networking, Internet Programming and Advanced Computing Paradigms.
The School offers programmes leading to M.Sc and Ph.D degrees in Computer Science.
M.Sc.Computer Science :A 4-semester full-time computer science course for graduate students.
The postgraduate programme of the School focus on strengthening the students’ knowledge in almost all areas of Computer Science and on exposing them to the issues involved in the development of computer systems.
Ph.D in Computer Science: Post-graduate students can obtain doctorate in computer science through full-time or part-time research.
The Ph.D programme aims at developing skills needed to identify issues related to a practical application and to formulate a theoretical research problem and then develop an effective solution independently
Admission to the M.Sc
Admission to the M.Sc. programme is based on performance of the candidates at three levels viz, the qualifying exam, the entrance exam and the interview.
The entrance examination is conducted by the School. The questions are objective in nature and consists of two parts-one based on Computer Science(Degree Level) and the other based on Mental Ability/Logical Reasoning. Marks allotted for each part are equal and there is penalty for each wrong answer. Questions in the first part measure the candidate’s knowledge in Computer Science and questions in the second part are intended to measure the candidate’s general intelligence, aptitude towards formulating a solution for a descriptive problem, analytical ability, logical reasoning and mental ability.
40 percent weightage is given to entrance exam.
The toppers in the entrance exam are called for an interview.
10 percent weightage is given for the interview.
Admission to PhD
Post graduates in Computer Science with minimum 55 percent marks who have passed the entrance examination conducted by the University are eligible to apply for the Ph.D programme. Eligible candidates with a strong commitment to do research can contact the school’s office to register their names for an interview with the doctoral committee. However, candidates having a valid GATE score or a valid JRF of CSIR/UGC are preferred.
The admission procedure is completed by the University in accordance with recommendations of the doctoral committee. Usually applications are called for in June and December of every year

Major Areas of ongoing research:
The School regularly conducts seminars, workshops and skill development programmes.
The C$$A (Computer Science Students’ Association) is an organization of the students of the School. C$$A was established with the goal of developing the overall skills of the students of the School of Computer Sciences. Ever since its formation, C$$A has been one of the most active organizations in the Mahatma Gandhi University campus.
The main activities of C$$A are organising technical symposia, obtaining project and job placement for students and conducting a magazine club.
Every year, the School in association with C$$A and alumni conducts
Interface, an annual software meet for computer science students from South India. An annual technical publication, IT Glimpse, is also released on the eve of INTERFACE.
The magazine club subscribes to various publications and in addition, has a good collection of software on CDs. All students have access to these magazines through the School library.
The School has a placement cell functioning under a faculty member. The cell organizes placement opportunities for the students who have successfully completed the course from the School. It also co-ordinates the placements for doing main project in industries.
The cell undertakes the publication of Placement Brochure. With its close interactions with industrial organizations, the cell organizes interviews on campus for the benefit of the students.
The School is housed in an independent three-storied building. The building has a well-equipped conference hall, a seminar hall, two computer labs, library, classrooms, faculty rooms and administrative office.
The School provides independent rooms for faculty members, technical staff and also a common room for students. The School also has a well-organized administrative office with computer facilities.
The students have access to the common facilities provided by the University like health center, canteens, hostels etc.
The School maintains two computing laboratories exclusively for the use of students and faculty members. Both the laboratories offer a wide range of computing facilities. Computers in the lab are connected through a LAN using structured cabling.
There is broadband internet access facility. Each student and faculty member is provided with a computer. The admission procedure, preparation of examination results etc have been automated using software packages developed in the School.
SUN Ultra 10 Workstation Ultra SPARC- IIi, 128 MB RAM, 4.3 GB SCSI Hard disk with CD drive, 4/8 GB DAT, Ethernet card, 17 inch monitor.
SERVER – Intel Xeon based tru server
C2D, C2Q, Dualcore based PCs with minimum 512 MB RAM.
Besides these, the lab facilities include
Operating Systems :
Windows 7/Vista/ XP
The School Library has a very good collection of carefully selected text books, reference books, journals and periodicals in a wide range of areas. In addition to the School’s Library, students can avail books from the University Library which also has an extensive collection of books and journals in different areas of computer science.
This wide collection of books, journals, and reports should suffice to meet the greater part of students requirements in respect of both course reading and the more specialized material associated with individual research interest. In addition to the books and journals, there are special categories of material such as University thesis etc. Collections of research materials in CD-ROM are also available. Huge bibliographic data bases are available in CD-ROM and when circumstances warrant, research and post graduate students have been given access to computerized data bases on a world wide basis.
The C$$A also subscribes some computer magazines. The School’s library also has a very good reading room.
