A state level nodal centre for Inter Disciplinary Studies has been set up in Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala to impart a high quality scientific education to the youth of India today – the program is revolutionary insofar as it seeks to create scientists who also have a deep appreciation of humanities. The five year Integrated Interdisciplinary MS program launched in 2009 has many innovative aspects. There are opportunities for employment through education as well as visits to reputed institutions within India and abroad. In addition to class room learning and experimental work , students will carry out original research. There are lectures by eminent visiting faculty, and extensive usage of technology enhanced learning techniques. It is also proposed to launch an innovative integrated PhD program in basic science.

New knowledge and new initiatives can only originate at the boundaries of disciplines. The centre functions with complete academic and administrative autonomy and operates through a single-window system under the university. The governing council is constituted with persons of national stature to prevent the centre from falling prey to parochial sentiments.

The Centre offers an Interdisciplinary integrated MS-PhD program for carrying out teaching and research in high priority areas of basic science.
The course is designed with unique innovative features covering contemporary thrust areas in Science and Humanities disciplines and conducted through

- Extensive use of technology enhanced learning techniques.
The learning process is broad and flexible. Knowledge generation is a part of the curriculum.
Maintenance of the instruments and Laboratory is also an integral part of the curriculum.
Objectives of the MS Program
- To develop highly talented human resource who can be at the forefront of new scientific revolution, and thereby serve the country’s need for fundamental research in science.
- To improve the standards of higher learning in the country, and to disseminate the scientific temper in the student fraternity.
- To enable students to analyze and solve problems keeping the Indian scenario in mind.
- To develop human resource for deployment in leading research organizations, Universities, and Industrial establishments like agro-pharmaceutical industry etc.
- To motivate the students to pursue basic research leading to the award of Ph.D. degree.
- To facilitate and promote filing of patents , and management of Intellectual Property Rights within the University system in the country.

- NMR Spectrometer
- HPLC is a form of column chromatography used frequently in biochemistry and analytical chemistry to separate, identify, and quantify compounds based on their idiosyncratic polarities and interactions with the column’s stationary phase. HPLC utilizes different types of stationary phase, a pump that moves the mobile phase(s) and analyte through the column, and a detector that provides a characteristic retention time for the analyte. The detector may also provide other characteristic information. Analyte retention time varies depending on the strength of its interactions with the stationary phase, the ratio/composition of solvent(s) used, and the flow rate of the mobile phase.
- With HPLC, a pump (rather than gravity) provides the high pressure required to propel the mobile phase and analyte through the densely packed column. The increased density arises from smaller particle sizes. This allows a better separation on columns of shorter length when compared to ordinary column chromatography.Services

- The centre entertains teachers and researchers from colleges and schools to execute their research projects.
- Short-term training programs in NMR and HPLC instrumentations.
- The centre also undertakes collaborative research projects, and shares teaching/course material-aids with colleges and other universities.
- Conducts short term Resource Generation Camps for designing thematic question papers and purposeful teaching.
- Provides assistance to the researchers for protecting their intellectual property(patent/copyright etc.)
- Create awareness about patents and challenges and opportunities in contemporary research.
- Services also include prior art search, drafting and filing patent applications etc.
- Technical help for marketing the inventions and transferring the technology or know-how.
- To promote projects aimed at the development of new techniques (Home-grown technologies)
