The role and status of the English language in the international context has changed radically over the past two or three decades. While English was the language of the bureaucracy in the colonial days and enjoyed the status of an elite language used by members of the higher echelons of society, it has, in the age of globalization, become the international medium of communication for all its sections. While English has always served as a link language in the multi-lingual polity of modern India and has been recognized as one of the official languages by the Union Government, it has, among the younger generation of the Indian people, acquired the unique position of the language of success and material prosperity. It has become the single, most important criterion for success in the job-market too. Communication skills in the English language thus become an important target for planners and administrators in the field of higher education. It is in this context that Mahatma Gandhi University has instituted the Centre for English Language and Communication Skills (CELCS) aimed at developing and upgrading communication skills in the English language among the students, researchers, employment seekers and the general public in the areas that come under the jurisdiction of the University. The Centre deals with all aspects of English Language Teaching and Communication Skill Development.
